NHR is revisiting a greenhouse project in the Venlo region of the Netherlands where wireless environmental sensing helped a grower identify uneven conditions across a large cultivation area.
Making microclimate differences visible
Plants in the same production batch were maturing unevenly, but the cause was difficult to identify through observation alone. The project installed 12 wireless temperature and humidity sensors across a one-hectare greenhouse. Their readings were combined into a heat-map view that made environmental differences easier to see.
With location-specific data, the grower could identify warmer, cooler, drier, or more humid areas and then review ventilation and moisture settings. Instead of treating the greenhouse as one uniform space, the team gained a clearer picture of the microclimates affecting crop development.
Decisions supported by continuous data
Real-time monitoring replaced part of the guesswork involved in diagnosing uneven growth. The grower could compare conditions across zones, make adjustments, and observe whether the environment became more consistent.
The deployment demonstrates the value of distributed sensing in controlled agriculture: a relatively small network of well-placed sensors can reveal patterns that are difficult to identify through observation or guesswork alone.
