NHR Smart Parking Supports More Efficient Mobility in Leiria, Portugal

NHR is highlighting a smart parking project in Leiria, Portugal, where real-time space information helps drivers spend less time searching for parking and gives the city a clearer view of curbside demand.

More than 300 spaces connected

Working with the city, the project installed more than 300 smart parking sensors in key locations. Each sensor identifies whether a parking space is occupied or vacant and sends that status to a digital platform. Drivers can check nearby availability through a web service or mobile application before reaching a busy area.

For the parking operator, the same data supports a better understanding of how spaces are being used. This makes it easier to review demand, manage parking resources, and identify areas where traffic flow can be improved.

Less circling, better use of city space

When drivers can see availability earlier, fewer trips are spent circling streets in search of an open space. The project therefore supports a more convenient visitor experience while helping reduce avoidable congestion and vehicle emissions.

Leiria's deployment illustrates how NHR space-level sensing can connect physical parking infrastructure with information that is useful to both the public and city managers.
